Henry Moore British, 1898-1986
Henry Moore (1898–1986) was a British sculptor best known for his reclining figures and abstract forms. Born in Castleford, Yorkshire, the son of a coal miner, he became one of the most recognised artists of the twentieth century.
Working mainly in bronze and stone, Moore drew inspiration from the human body, landscapes and natural objects such as bones and pebbles. He often used openings and hollow spaces to give his sculptures a sense of lightness and connect them with their surroundings.
During the Second World War, he also made drawings of Londoners sheltering in Underground stations. Today, his sculptures can be found in museums, parks and public spaces around the world.
